{"id":10009,"date":"2015-04-10T16:49:17","date_gmt":"2015-04-10T06:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinaworker.info\/?p=10009"},"modified":"2015-04-10T14:29:43","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T06:29:43","slug":"china-feminism-is-not-a-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2015\/04\/10\/10009\/","title":{"rendered":"China: \u201cFeminism is not a crime!\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Release the five women activists in China!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Statement by Defend Chinese Feminists Campaign<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Five young women known for their \u201cguerrilla art\u201d style of raising awareness on women\u2019s rights were arrested on the eve of International Women&#8217;s Day, 8 March, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Their names are: Wu Rongrong (\u6b66\u5d58\u5d58) age 30, Zheng Churan (\u90d1\u695a\u7136) aka Da Tu (\u5927\u5154) 26, Li Tingting (\u674e\u5a77\u5a77) aka Li Maizi (\u674e\u9ea6\u5b50) 26, Wang Man (\u738b\u66fc) 32, and Wei Tingting (\u97e6\u5a77\u5a77) 26.<\/p>\n<p>They are the latest victims of Xi Jinping\u2019s sweeping crackdown on labour activists, rights lawyers and anti-corruption whistle-blowers. Over 1,000 regime critics were detained in China last year in the worst repression since the early 1990s. Xi has shown he will not tolerate even \u2018moderate\u2019 critics who do not challenge one-party rule. There are fears the five feminists will be charged with \u201cpicking quarrels and provoking trouble\u201d \u2013 a vague offence that can mean up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2015\/04\/10995394_1560917067511281_8956767135823421389_n-e1428647348244.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10012\" src=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2015\/04\/10995394_1560917067511281_8956767135823421389_n-600x300.jpg\" alt=\"10995394_1560917067511281_8956767135823421389_n\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The arrest of the five Chinese activists is an attack on the rights of all women around the world. In China and worldwide women face discrimination, low pay and fewer educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 70% of the world\u2019s poor are women.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Women in China earn on average 67% of men\u2019s earnings, down from 78% in 1990. In Hong Kong average women\u2019s wages are only 78% of men\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 More than one-third of the world\u2019s women have suffered sexual or domestic violence according to the WHO. In Hong Kong sexual violence cases have increased 1.8 times in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese regime seems to want to outlaw feminist struggle, adding this to the long list of forbidden political activities in China. We cannot rely on the world\u2019s governments and political leaders to pressure the Chinese dictatorship as they always put their business interests first. The pressure must come from a grassroots international solidarity campaign that speaks up for freedom of speech and women&#8217;s rights.
