{"id":11614,"date":"2015-12-19T16:25:57","date_gmt":"2015-12-19T08:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinaworker.info\/?p=11614"},"modified":"2015-12-19T16:44:57","modified_gmt":"2015-12-19T08:44:57","slug":"protest-against-alibabas-acquisition-of-scmp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2015\/12\/19\/11614\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong protest: Against\u00a0Alibaba\u2019s acquisition of SCMP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Defend freedom of press!<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Socialist Action Reporters<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday 19 December,\u00a0a protest was held in Hong Kong outside <em>South China Morning Post<\/em>\u00a0offices against the takeover of the territories major English language newspaper by Alibaba, the Chinese internet giant.\u00a0The protest was organised by Socialist Action and supported\u00a0by the League of\u00a0Social Democrats. Demonstrators chanted \u201cDefend press freedom,\u201d \u201cNo to\u00a0CCP media empire\u201d, \u201cAgainst media monopoly\u201d and other slogans.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese multi-billion corporation\u00a0Alibaba\u00a0has just announced its plans to acquire the\u00a0<em>South China Morning Post<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0HKD 2.6 billion. This will inevitably lead to a further\u00a0decline\u00a0of the editorial independence of SCMP, and a greater threat to the freedom of press in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>Alibaba\u2019s CEO, Jack Ma, is closely linked with the top leadership of the CCP,\u00a0and\u00a0the latter has always tried to increase its control over the media and information through acquiring media corporations. In an interview with the SCMP, Jack Ma stated that Deng Xiaoping\u2019s decision to initiate the June 4 Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 \u201cwas the most correct decision\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Alibaba\u2019s executive vice president, Cai Congxin, also expressed hopes that the SCMP will\u00a0adopt\u00a0\u201canother perspective\u201d, \u201cbe more objective\u201d when reporting China. With\u00a0a\u00a0new pro-CCP boss in charge of the SCMP, news\u00a0reports will very likely be subjected to limitation or censorship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2015\/12\/SCMP-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11605\" src=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2015\/12\/SCMP-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2015\/12\/SCMP-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2015\/12\/SCMP-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2015\/12\/SCMP-1-83x55.jpg 83w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2015\/12\/SCMP-1-310x206.jpg 310w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2015\/12\/SCMP-1-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The top leadership of the SCMP has become closer\u00a0to\u00a0the CCP\u00a0regime\u00a0over the last few years. The most recent editor-in-chief, Tammy Tam, is being seen as a staunch pro-CY Leung figure. Her predecessor, Wang Xiangwei, was a former committee member of the Jilin province CPPCC. During the 2012 \u201csuicide\u201d incident of the worker activist Li Wangyang, Wang personally deleted the initial news article and replaced it with an extremely short report, and threatened the employees who objected\u00a0to\u00a0his actions.\u00a0This has\u00a0shown that the editorial independence of the SCMP has been under constant attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, China has banned the website of the SCMP for nearly one year, since the Umbrella Movement broke out last year, and has only recently unbanned it. Being a Chinese company itself,\u00a0Alibaba\u00a0will inevitably force the SCMP to engage in self-censorship in order to stay online in mainland China. The SCMP is often a source for reports by other international media in their coverage of China and the CCP regime&#8217;s policies. There is clearly a wider strategic element in this change of ownership \u2013 to influence the international media&#8217;s views of the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>Socialist Action defends the editorial independence of mass media and the freedom of press. We oppose the actions of the CCP in oppressing such freedom, and are also against the private corporate control over the media.
