On the evening of 18 June, after weeks of protests in which CWI Taiwan members have a played an important organising role, the Ministry of Education announced the tuition fee hikes would be stopped\u00a0at 12 of the capital\u2019s 14 universities \u2013 all except the two that did not take part in the protests! At those two (National Chi Nan University and Taipei University of Nursing and Health Science) a\u00a02.5 percent rise in fees was approved by the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Vincent Hsu from\u00a0Shih Hsin University is a spokesman for the students\u2019 campaign against the fee increase and also active in CWI Taiwan. He explains, \u201cThis is an important victory. My university made a profit of 500 million NTD (\u20ac13.7 million) over the past three years, while 25 percent of our students need to apply for student loans to pay their way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new DPP* government of president Tsai Ing-wen clearly fears alienating youth so soon into its term of office and this explains the education ministry\u2019s climbdown.\u00a0Students have held a series of protest rallies and seminars on campus. The CWI in Taiwan has been especially active at Shih Hsin University collecting signatures and running stalls against the fee\u00a0increase.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12911\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12911\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12911\" src=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2016\/06\/Vincent-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Protest at Ministry of Education, Vincent Hsu (centre).\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Protest at Ministry of Education, Vincent Hsu (centre).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe victory of this struggle will inspire all students to fight against poverty and austerity measures,\u201d says Vincent. \u201cIf we organise and fight we can win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we must also strengthen student organisation by activating more students and linking up organisations in different universities. The student movement should also link up with the workers\u2019 movement to fight against austerity measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTsai\u2019s government is enjoying a honeymoon at the moment but will face big pressure from Taiwan and international capitalism in the coming months to push tougher austerity policies. Tsai, the new president, was sworn into office on 20 May.
