Lee, chinaworker.info<\/p>\n<p>A leading feminist blog account with 80,000 followers has been closed down in China for voicing criticism of US president Donald Trump\u2019s racist and sexist policies. Sina Weibo, China\u2019s equivalent of Twitter, closed down two\u00a0accounts operated by\u00a0\u2018Feminist Voices\u2019 for 30 days on Monday. The action was taken after the group made several posts in solidarity with the global initiative for a \u2018general strike\u2019 by women (also known as \u2018Day Without Women\u2019) on 8 March, International Women\u2019s Day. Women\u2019s strikes are reportedly planned in over 30 countries. That this initiative should\u00a0reach China, where strikes are banned and street protests swiftly put down, is very significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are guessing that it\u2019s because we sent out some tweets calling for a women\u2019s strike action against Trump,\u201d said Xiong Jing, an editor of \u2018Feminist Voices\u2019. The group had not been told the specific reason for the ban other than that recent posts had \u201cviolated\u201d state laws, she told the US-funded Radio Free Asia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14195\" src=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2017\/02\/Fem-600x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Deepening crackdown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Chinese dictatorship is increasingly nervy over all forms of protest especially in a year when \u2018core leader\u2019 Xi Jinping faces a crucial leadership reshuffle through\u00a0which he seeks to consolidate his grip on state power. Recent years have seen a deepening crackdown with mass arrests of worker activists, rights lawyers and those\u00a0\u2018spreading rumours\u2019 on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>New laws have been introduced in the past year to increase control over NGOs and tighten rules for social media. As reported on <strong>chinaworker.info<\/strong>, state censors issued instructions in January to ban\u00a0\u201cunauthorised criticism\u201d of the Trump administration, reflecting Beijing\u2019s fears that this issue could become a flashpoint for unrest in China.<\/p>\n<p>Almost exactly two years ago, five feminist activists were arrested in China for planning protests on public transport against violence against women. The five were released after worldwide protests in what was a rare climb down by the Chinese regime. These activists are still charged and under constant state surveillance. The action against \u2018Feminist Voices\u2019 follows a similar pattern in that it comes in the run up to International Women\u2019s Day and the annual meeting of China\u2019s pseudo-parliament, the National People\u2019s Congress (NPC).<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s rights campaigners along with others in China have been inspired by the historic 4 million-strong women\u2019s marches against Trump in January. \u2018Feminist Voices\u2019 has posted in support of the international strike on 8 March and translated into Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/feb\/06\/women-strike-trump-resistance-power\">the article, which first appeared in the Guardian newspaper<\/a>, by US-based feminists including Angela Davies which called for a \u201cnew wave of militant feminist struggle\u201d, particularly targeting Trump\u2019s \u201caggressively misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic and racist policies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upsurge in struggle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Li Tingting, one of five feminists detained in 2015, told RFA, \u201cThere is considerable momentum around the women\u2019s rights movement, and the public opinion supervision authorities have been censoring it ferociously.\u201d She saw this as \u201cpart of an overall clampdown across the board,\u201d by the Chinese regime.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese authorities\u2019 reaction (Sina Weibo and other media companies act as enforcers for the Chinese government) shows the huge global impact of the ongoing mass resistance to Trump and the upsurge in women\u2019s activism which predates his government \u2013 with standout examples of mass women\u2019s struggle in Poland and Argentina last year.<\/p>\n<p>While there are special factors in China, with its zero tolerance of independent political movements, the case also shows how the political establishment worldwide is deeply worried that Trump and his political agenda can destabilise world relations and radicalise societies \u2013 women, trade unionists, migrants and ethnic minorities \u2013 outside the borders of the US.<\/p>\n<p><strong>chinaworker.info<\/strong> (which is banned in China) and the Chinese supporters of the Committee for a Workers\u2019 International (CWI) are organising protests against\u00a0the ban on \u2018Feminist Voices\u2019 and also planning demonstrations and meetings in solidarity with the international women\u2019s strikes and against Trump\u2019s racist, sexist, extreme right wing agenda on 8 March.
