He\u2019s also one of several workers\u2019 leaders from around the world who has put his name to a petition against political repression in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/form.jotform.me\/72674408985471\">petition \u2018Global Solidarity \u2013 Stop Repression in Hong Kong\u2019<\/a> has been signed by the six members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/politics\/solidarity-pbp-rules-out-future-coalition-with-sinn-f%C3%A9in-1.3219425\">Solidarity-People Before Profit<\/a> group in the Irish Parliament (<em>D\u00e1il<\/em>), along with political activists in dozens of countries from Indonesia to the US. These include elected councillors, dissidents, and relatives of political prisoners.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/form.jotform.me\/72674408985471\">Link to petition\u00a0\u27b5<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>The petition offers its \u201cfull solidarity with the struggle for democratic rights in Hong Kong, China, and globally\u201d. It also criticises \u201c[t]he increasing use of Hong Kong\u2019s law courts as a tool of political repression\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The petition is part of a new campaign to be officially launched on Thursday 12 October, exactly one year since Hong Kong\u2019s government \u2013 which is not elected by the people \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2016\/11\/17\/13647\/\">began its purge of the Legislative Council (Legco)<\/a>\u00a0ousting six opposition lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Sally Tang Mei-ching is one of the coordinators of the campaign. Sally, who is chairperson of Socialist Action (CWI) in Hong Kong, explained the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they disqualified the legislators after the 2016 election it was the start of an unprecedented series of attacks on Hong Kong\u2019s democracy movement. This year we\u2019ve seen a trend with more and more political trials, very harsh jail sentences for protesters and many attacks on freedom of speech,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16042\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16042 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2017\/10\/Sally-600x382.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"382\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sally Tang Mei-ching campaigning in Hong Kong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Political prisoners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve also seen huge protests against the repression in Hong Kong such as on 20 August, just days after 16 young activists were jailed for up to 13 months. <a href=\"http:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2017\/08\/22\/15622\/\">Over 100,000 came out on that demonstration<\/a> which shook the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly mass resistance can stop the repression but the Hong Kong struggle also needs support internationally. This can also help the struggle for democratic rights to get a different perspective rather than only looking within Hong Kong. It is more and more necessary to globalise struggle in order to win \u2013 especially when we\u2019re up against the world\u2019s biggest dictatorship,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2017\/08\/18\/15583\/12731\/\">Sixteen young activists are behind bars<\/a>, becoming Hong Kong\u2019s first political prisoners. This followed a government initiated court action in August to re-open sentencing after the sixteen had already served non-custodial sentences handed down in the lower courts in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More political trials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Friday 13 October a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/law-crime\/article\/1922499\/high-court-allows-contempt-court-actions-against-20-occupy\">new trial gets underway for 20 activists<\/a> charged with defying a court order to clear the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mong-kok-becomes-wild-card-for-hong-kong-protesters-1413216332\">Mong Kok occupation site<\/a> \u2013 one of three city areas occupied during the <a href=\"http:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2014\/11\/19\/8583\/\">79-day-long Umbrella Revolution<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>It is feared that at least some among the 20 defendants, who include members of pro-democracy political parties the League of Social Democrats (LSD) and Demosisto, could also face imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-Beijing establishment in Hong Kong aims to criminalise protests and silence the democracy movement. This is the brief that the Hong Kong government has been given by its masters in the central government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hong Kong and China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Stop Repression in Hong Kong campaign also links solidarity with Hong Kong\u2019s democracy struggle to what is happening in China,\u201d said Sally Tang Mei-ching. \u201cThe idea that Hong Kong can win real democracy without systemic change in China has been shown to be impossible. As long as the one-party dictatorship rules it means Hong Kong is being transformed from a \u2018partial democracy\u2019 into an authoritarian state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crackdown is because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/china\/21621846-days-student-led-unrest-hong-kong-are-crisis-chinas-communist-party-no-exit\">Chinese regime fears Hong Kong\u2019s democracy protests could spread to the mainland<\/a>. So in a way they are showing us what needs to be done in order to fight the repression in Hong Kong,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters representing left organisations, labour unions and social movements will stage protests at Chinese embassies and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices which directly represent the Hong Kong government in such cities as London and Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn 12 October there will be protests in 20 cities across all continents,\u201d said Sally Tang Mei-ching. \u201cThese include Colombo, New York, Vancouver, Vienna, Moscow, Berlin, Lisbon and Kuala Lumpur.
