{"id":19698,"date":"2019-01-29T14:29:42","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T06:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/?p=19698"},"modified":"2019-02-16T22:09:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T14:09:06","slug":"taiwan-socialists-hold-landmark-marxist-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2019\/01\/29\/19698\/","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan socialists hold landmark Marxist School"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>First political conference by an international socialist organisation since 1949<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Reports by Dikang and Triet Tran<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An enthusiastic rendition of\nthe \u2018Internationale\u2019 closed the very successful two-day Marxist School\norganised by International Socialist Forward (CWI in Taiwan) on 26-27 January.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Camp-featured-image-600x439.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-featured-image-600x439.jpg 600w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-featured-image-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-featured-image-75x55.jpg 75w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-featured-image-310x227.jpg 310w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-featured-image-60x45.jpg 60w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-featured-image.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Successful school&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>40 participants gathered on a mountainside resort above Taipei, coming from seven cities in Taiwan as well as Hong Kong and international guests from Australia and Israel-Palestine. This was a small piece of history \u2013 the first such political gathering held by an international socialist organisation since 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek\u2019s military dictatorship decamped to Taiwan after losing the Chinese civil war. Fifteen participants, over half of them workers, were not members but attending their first event organised by ISF, and five of them said they want to join during the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ISF enjoyed a successful 2018.\nWhile still a small organisation, its membership doubled especially through\nenergetic campaigning for LGBTIQ rights in the run up to November\u2019s referendum\nand in protests against the government\u2019s neoliberal labour reform. In December,\nthe organisation opened its first office on the island. Confidence about\nbuilding an even stronger force was shown in the financial appeal during the\nweekend school, which raised the outstanding sum of 38,000 Taiwan dollars\n(US$1,234). Considering the long distances many had travelled this was a great\nresult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Camp-1-600x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-1-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-1-110x55.jpg 110w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-1-310x155.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Political instability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaiwan politics have seen\nfrantic swings in recent months showing the instability of the capitalist\ntwo-party system. Tsai Ing-wen\u2019s ruling DPP suffered a devastating defeat in\nNovember\u2019s regional elections, with the more pro-China Kuomintang (KMT) winning\n15 of 22 cities and regions,\u201d explained Vincent Hsu of ISF in opening two days\nof discussion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsai was forced to resign the chairmanship of the DPP and faced growing questions over her plans to again be the party\u2019s candidate in next year\u2019s presidential race. But this changed dramatically with Xi Jinping\u2019s militaristic speech on 2 January, saying a \u201csolution\u201d to the Taiwan question could not drag on indefinitely, and reviving a \u201cone country, two systems\u201d offer modelled on Hong Kong\u2019s reunification in 1997. With Hong Kong in the grip of a deepening political crackdown by Xi\u2019s regime, this idea repels and alarms most people in Taiwan especially the younger generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tsai seized upon Xi\u2019s speech as\na political lifeline thrown to her party, positioning herself as a \u201cstrong\nwoman\u201d who defends democratic rights against the Chinese regime\u2019s attempts to\nexport dictatorship, said Vincent. Her gambit has succeeded in the short term,\nwith an upsurge in support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/VH-Camp-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/VH-Camp-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/VH-Camp-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/VH-Camp-83x55.jpg 83w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/VH-Camp-310x207.jpg 310w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/VH-Camp-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/VH-Camp.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c80 percent of the population\nsupport Tsai\u2019s rejection of Xi\u2019s proposals,\u201d he explained. \u201cThis turnaround\nreflects fear of the Chinese dictatorship rather than support for the DPP\ngovernment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany see Tsai\u2019s stand on the\ncross-strait issue as defending democratic rights, but in fact the DPP\ngovernment\u2019s policies, like those of the Kuomintang opposition, are unchanged:\nneoliberal attacks on workers and youth, sweatshop jobs, restrictions on the\nright to protest and a betrayal of promises over LGBTIQ rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting discussed the need for a workers\u2019 party in Taiwan to offer a clear socialist alternative to the two pro-capitalist blocs. In this discussion the differences were also brought out in the programme and approach of the CWI and Marxism, compared to various \u201cothers\u201d and \u201cthird parties\u201d on the Taiwan political scene, such as the New Power Party, the Social Democrats and Greens, all of which are politically trapped within the confines of the capitalist system and support for one or other gang of capitalist rulers in the cross-strait dispute: either the US and Taiwanese national capitalists, or China\u2019s equally anti-worker and pro-billionaire regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Camp-2-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19702\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-2-83x55.jpg 83w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-2-310x207.jpg 310w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-2-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Camp-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>National Question<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other sessions during the\nweekend covered Mass Struggles in China, International Perspectives, Women\u2019s\nStruggle and the National Question, featuring the crucial question of the\nChina-US-Taiwan conflict and socialists\u2019 support for an independent Taiwan as\npart of a united working class movement against capitalism and authoritarian\nrule on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and across Asia. A particular highlight\nof the School was the presentation on the situation in Israel-Palestine by\nShahar Benhorin of Socialist Struggle Movement, the CWI\u2019s section there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTsai Ing-wen went to Israel\nand clearly the DPP government sees Israel as a model for their capitalist\nstate,\u201d Shahar said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no coincidence that like\nthe KMT, also the liberal DPP haven\u2019t moved to formally recognise a Palestinian\nstate or denounce the Israeli occupation and oppression of millions of\nPalestinians. It shows the Taiwanese ruling elite\u2019s pro-imperialist and totally\nreactionary outlook and role, and their lack of a solution for Taiwan\u2019s\nnational question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a good discussion on\nMarxism\u2019s approach to the national question and the need for working class\nunity and struggle against crisis-torn capitalism as the key factor for\nresolving these complex issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Shahar-Camp-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Shahar-Camp-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Shahar-Camp-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Shahar-Camp-83x55.jpg 83w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Shahar-Camp-310x207.jpg 310w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Shahar-Camp-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/Shahar-Camp.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThe ISF camp gave me new perspectives\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>chinaworker.info&nbsp;spoke to several of the participants during the Taiwan Marxist School<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Triet Tran, Socialist Party\n(CWI in Australia)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hejun Tang is a factory worker making sewing machines in Taoyuan, about 45km from Taipei:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got active in politics\naround the Sunflower Movement [mass anti-government protests] in 2014. I\nsupport Taiwan independence but saw that both the DPP and KMT don\u2019t seem to\nanswer the economic issues related to the independence debate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was pushed away from the DPP because\nthey initiated the labour law reform in government [biggest attack on workers\u2019\nconditions and hours for 30 years].&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI read Socialist magazine and agree with\nthe points made in the discussion about capitalist parties. I think they are\nelection parties and not activist parties, including the third party called New\nPower Party in the Taoyuan area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Howard is an ex-factory worker at a company making contact lenses:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI met International Socialist Forward\nthrough the LGBTIQ campaign last year when I came to one of the demonstrations.\nNow I have been at some of your regular meetings and enjoyed the camp so far.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI particularly found the\ndiscussion on the US and China conflict interesting. For Taiwan we are really\nstuck in a proxy conflict between US and China and we need a third party here.\nI think both the KMT and the DPP are not capable of having an independent\nposition in the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wang Je Min works in legal service and has been active in issues about workers\u2019 rights:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI joined the protests against\nlabour law reform because I believe the government was attacking our conditions\nwith the changes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came across International Socialist\nForward through facebook because some other friends of mine liked the party\u2019s\nfacebook page. This is my first meeting and I think all topics presented at the\ncamp are interesting. I have had progressive values before coming to the camp,\nbut I was also curious to learn about what socialism is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe education system in Taiwan equates\nsocialism with the Chinese dictatorship, but I learned a lot from the ISF camp\nin the last two days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4twinterviewees-2-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/4twinterviewees-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/4twinterviewees-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/4twinterviewees-2-73x55.jpg 73w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/4twinterviewees-2-310x233.jpg 310w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/4twinterviewees-2-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/01\/4twinterviewees-2-60x45.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hsu Chang Hao is a high school teacher:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI originally followed\npolitical pages about politics and labour issues on facebook and came across\nthe page of ISF so I decided to come to this camp. The best discussion was\nabout Taiwan perspectives. I think the analysis of Taiwan\u2019s society in that\nsession is spot on. We really have no choice from the established parties now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI read about the ideas of socialism\nbefore and I\u2019m also concerned about social movements fighting for rights like\nthe LGBTIQ movement here in Taiwan and labour issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a member of the teachers union but I\nthink that union leaderships are mostly just talking but not really having any\nactive campaigns for members\u2019 rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>Yvonne<\/strong> <strong> works as a payroll administrator for an accounting firm:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m particularly concerned about the\nissue of labour conditions and LGBTIQ rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur work is hard with long hours and no\novertime pay. I and my co-workers work up to 10 hours a day during the busy tax\nperiod.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI met ISF through street stalls for the\nLGBTIQ referendum, I started to join the stalls twice a week and meetings once\na week. I became a member five months ago. I think it has a very welcoming\nculture. Established members said we can all develop and we can all contribute\nto make our organisation grow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI found the most interesting discussion\nis about Taiwan perspectives and especially cross-strait relations. I supported\nthe DPP before, because they stand for independence, but then they gave up talk\nof independence after getting into government and turned to attack workers and\nLGBTIQ rights, so it was confusing for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter joining the party, I can see it\nclearly now that these injustices are the faults of the capitalist system.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shieh Cheng Lin&nbsp;is studying electrical engineering:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI follow political discussions\non online forums and I\u2019ve discussed with an ISF member. The main political\nissue for me is Taiwan independence, but I found the camp gave me new\nperspectives on many things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never thought about the issue of victim\nblaming [in sexual violence cases] in a serious way, but the discussions have\nhelped me realise this is a real problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed the discussion about how change\ncan come about in China. I had a question about how our movement can overcome\nwhat seems to be an all-powerful technical surveillance system in China, but\ngot a good answer in the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe heard many examples of mass movements\nin China and I realise now that all those surveillance systems would not stop\nsimilar mass movements.
