Under Taiwanese law, this carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail. Please send protest messages and solidarity with comrade Hsu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expansion of right-wing, nationalistic,\npro-CCP media outlets in Taiwan, which wield a growing influence on the\nisland\u2019s politics, has become a big issue, with strong opposition from workers\nand youth who oppose the Chinese dictatorship\u2019s increasingly belligerent claims\non Taiwan. For example pro-CCP media denounced the strike of 2,000 women\nworkers at Eva Air and supported the strike-breaking bosses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/w644-600x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/07\/w644-600x400.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/07\/w644-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/07\/w644-83x55.jpeg 83w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/07\/w644-310x207.jpeg 310w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/07\/w644-180x120.jpeg 180w, https:\/\/media1.chinaworker.info\/2019\/07\/w644.jpeg 644w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On 26 June, 200,000 Taiwanese marched\nagainst \u2018red media\u2019 in a protest organised by pro-independence parties and\ngroups. CWI comrades intervened in this mass protest with our material opposing\nall corporate media, opposing all capitalist governments \u2013 China, Taiwan, US,\netc. \u2013 and calling for democratic public ownership and control of mass media\nand broadcasting. Please sign, send and share the solidarity statement below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Solidarity with Hsu Wei-Yu!<\/li><li>Defend freedom of speech!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hsu Wei-Yu, the spokesman of ISF\n(International Socialist Forward, CWI in Taiwan) has been accused of \u201ccriminal\noffence against reputation\u201d [libel] by a pro-CCP media company, CTi, in Taiwan.\nThis was after ISF held a protest against the CTi to show solidarity with the\nmass anti-authoritarian struggle in Hong Kong and also to refute the false\naccusations CTi made against the EVA Air workers\u2019 strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that protest, ISF severely criticised\nthis company, opposing the CCP\u2019s dictatorship, supporting democratic rights in\nHong Kong, opposing big business policies and fighting for workers\u2019 interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, pro-CCP media corporations\nlike CTi have been scolded, hated, detested by growing sections of the public.\nIt is revealed in publicly available records that the owner and top managers of\nthis corporation have close links with the CCP regime in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of people joined a\nrally in Taipei against pro-CCP media on June 26. Our own protest echoed the\nvoice of youth and grassroots workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current accusation against Hsu has\nshown that even in \u201cdemocratic\u201d Taiwan, freedom of speech doesn\u2019t apply to\ngrassroots working people but only to the owners of corporate media who oppress\ncritical voices by intimidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The political persecution of Hsu is not a\npersonal affair, but the first step of an attack against the whole movement\nopposing pro-CCP media. The conviction of Hsu would be a threat to the\nmovement. Therefore, we appeal to all organisations and individuals who defend\nthe right to free speech and oppose pro-CCP media for solidarity with Hsu and\nto condemn the accusations against him. I think this protest, which exposed the falsehoods spread by CTi\nand its connection with the CCP regime in China, was in accordance with freedom\nof assembly, freedom speech and freedom of political association, and in\ndefence of the right to information in the public interest.
