{"id":5977,"date":"2014-02-17T22:14:41","date_gmt":"2014-02-17T13:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinaworker.info\/?p=5977"},"modified":"2014-02-26T09:59:08","modified_gmt":"2014-02-26T01:59:08","slug":"hong-kong-refugee-occupation-evicted-by-court-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinaworker.info\/en\/2014\/02\/17\/5977\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong: Refugee occupation evicted by court order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Refugee Union vows to continue and step up the struggle with new protests against rogue welfare company ISS-HK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Socialist Action reporters<\/p>\n<p>On the seventh day of its round-the-clock occupation of social welfare offices in Hong Kong\u2019s Prince Edward district, the newly formed Refugee Union representing hundreds of refugees was ordered by the High Court to end its action and leave the premises.<\/p>\n<p>ISS-HK, the aid group which is the focus of the protests, went to the High Court on Monday 17 February, to obtain an injunction against the occupation. In yet another example of the class-bias of the judicial system, the judgement also prevents those who took part in the protest from entering ISS-HK welfare offices without written permission. ISS-HK is a subsidiary of International Social Services, a Swiss-based NGO, which combines the roles of \u201caid group\u201d and limited company. In 2006 it won the lucrative HK$203 million per year government contract to administer aid to around 5,000 refugees in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis court decision is the latest in a long line of pro-corporate rulings,\u201d said Sally Tang Mei-ching of Socialist Action, who is active in support of the occupation. \u201cThe dockworkers faced similar anti-working class rulings during their strike last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At meetings on Monday evening the members of the Refugee Union decided to continue their protest with new demonstrations planned for Tuesday 18 February.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5979\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2014\/02\/Prince-Edward2-e1392642812210.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5979\" alt=\"Refugees discuss the next steps in their campaign\" src=\"http:\/\/media.chinaworker.info\/2014\/02\/Prince-Edward2-600x442.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Refugees discuss the next steps in their campaign<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is not the end of our struggle, we will just change the tactics,\u201d said Raymond, one of the occupiers. \u201cThe court action shows that ISS-HK is feeling the pressure of our campaign and they should get ready to feel even more pressure in future,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n<p>The occupiers\u2019 complaints against ISS-HK range from manipulation of monthly food allowances to substandard housing and other malpractices. Last week a formal complaint was filed with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), to demand that ISS be investigated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe refugees involved in the occupation deserve the full support of Hong Kong grassroots people and workers,\u201d said Sally Tang Mei-ching. \u201cWe have heard many individual complaints about ISS-HK failing in its responsibilities. We understand the anger of this very discriminated group and we are inspired by their courage and determination to fight for a fair deal,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A new facebook page has been set up for the Refugee Union, to help publicise its coming activities.
