Has the commemoration of International Women\u2019s Day also now been outlawed in China?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chinese dictatorship celebrated International Women\u2019s Day by arresting women activists, a move that has caused outrage around the world. The arrests highlight the widening repression under Xi Jinping\u00a0\u2013China\u2019s \u2018paramount leader\u2019 \u2013 and also how women\u2019s rights are being stifled in China today. On 6 and 7 March, just before International Women\u2019s Day (8 March) and just as the annual \u2018red carpet meeting\u2019 of the NPC (National People\u2019s Congress) was getting underway in Beijing, security forces arrested at least ten women activists for preparing protests to highlight gender\u00a0oppression.<\/p>\n

This was a trans-provincial action by the Chinese police. Activists were arrested in different places \u2013 in Beijing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou. Some of the activists have been released, but five well-known feminist activists are still being detained. Their names are: Wu Rongrong (\u6b66\u5d58\u5d58) age 30, Zheng Churan (\u90d1\u695a\u7136) aka Da Tu (\u5927\u5154) 26, Li Tingting (\u674e\u5a77\u5a77) aka Li Maizi (\u674e\u9ea6\u5b50) 26, Wang Man (\u738b\u66fc) 32, and Wei Tingting (\u97e6\u5a77\u5a77) 26. Li Tingting was arrested in Beijing, Zheng Churan was arrested in Guangzhou, and Wu Rongrong in Hangzhou.<\/p>\n

The women planned to organise protests in different cities on 8 March, International Women\u2019s Day, to march in a park in Beijing city, and go on public transport with stickers to spread the message against sexual harassment.<\/p>\n

In recent years these activists have become well known with their \u201cperformance art\u201d to arouse public awareness on women\u2019s rights in China. This includes the \u2018Occupy men\u2019s toilets\u2019 campaign to demand increased women\u2019s toilet facilities in public places, and also an action wearing white wedding dresses daubed with red paint as a protest against domestic violence. They are members of the Women\u2019s Rights Action Group, which campaigns against gender discrimination.<\/p>\n

\u201cPicking quarrels and provoking troubles\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Time magazine points out, the five activists \u201cwere not advocating for the overthrow of the Communist Party.\u201d Nor did they \u201corganize political rallies, but rather used performance art to challenge societal views.\u201d [Time magazine, 19 March 2015]. Once again, as with crackdowns against anti-corruption whistle-blowers and campaigners for ethnic minority rights, Xi\u2019s ultra-repressive machine has struck even against moderate within-the-system critics.<\/p>\n

On 12 March, the five\u00a0were reportedly officially charged by police with \u201ccreating a disturbance, picking quarrels and provoking troubles\u201d. This is a catch-all charge widely used by the dictatorship to silence and incarcerate regime critics \u2013 including workers\u2019 representatives and \u2018political reform\u2019 activists. A guilty verdict can carry a sentence of up to five years in prison. The five can now be held in detention for 37 days before the authorities decide whether to press ahead with\u00a0formal charges.<\/p>\n

Solidarity action stopped in China \u2013 International solidarity needed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since\u00a0the five women activists were arrested there have been petition activities around China to call for their release, but in many\u00a0schools and universities these actions have been stopped by the authorities with school officials threatening reprisals against students. Related websites and social media platforms have been blocked in China.<\/p>\n

International solidarity action is needed urgently. The CWI (Committee for a Workers\u2019 International) which has an exemplary record of campaigning against sexism and discrimination, as well as\u00a0against state repression, can play a key role in initiating protests given its extensive global connections and active organisations\u00a0in more than 40 countries. The Chinese supporters of the CWI, in China and Hong Kong (Socialist Action), are appealing to socialists and women\u2019s activists internationally to organise\u00a0protests, by writing to the Chinese authorities and staging demonstrations\u00a0demanding the release of the \u2018China 5\u2019.<\/p>\n
